Company Profile
Uniper, headquartered in Düsseldorf, is a European energy company with a global reach and operations in over 40 countries. With approximately 7,500 employees, the company plays a central role in ensuring a secure energy supply in Europe—particularly in its core markets of Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands. With 14 gigawatts of flexible power plant capacity, Uniper is the backbone of reliable electricity generation. As a leading natural gas trader and one of the most important LNG importers in Northwestern Europe, Uniper strengthens security of supply with a broad procurement portfolio. Through investments in renewable energy, hydrogen, and other forms oflow-carbon energy sources, Uniper is also driving the transformation of the energy system.
In its home market of Germany, Uniper supplies energy and services to approximately 1,000 municipalities and industrial companies. In addition, Uniper is Germany’s largest operator of natural gas storage facilities and hydroelectric power plants.
Uniper aims to be completely carbon-neutral by 2040. By 2030, approximately 50 percent of its installed power plant capacity is expected to be used for carbon-free electricity generation. To this end, the company is transforming its own power plants and investing in flexible and predictable power generation facilities. Uniper is already one of the largest operators of hydroelectric power plants in Europe and is driving the further expansion of solar and wind energy as the key to a more sustainable and secure future.
Uniper is active across the entire value chain and is developing projects for the production, storage, and import of hydrogen on an industrial scale. Key projects include the Energy Transformation Hubs in northwestern Germany and in Killingholme, UK, which combine production and import. Another key project is the Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park, where Uniper is developing a 30-MW electrolysis plant in partnership with VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH. In addition, Uniper is building a demonstration plant in Gelsenkirchen, in collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde, to produce hydrogen from ammonia; this plant will serve as a blueprint for the planned hydrogen import terminal in Wilhelmshaven—an important step toward the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries.
