Explosion protection encompasses all measures taken to prevent explosions. This is particularly important in hydrogen facilities, as hydrogen forms an explosive gas mixture with air and therefore requires special safety precautions.
Explosion protection is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary protective measures. Primary explosion protection prevents the formation of an explosive atmosphere. These include leak-tight plant components, regular leak tests, and mechanical ventilation. Secondary measures prevent the ignition of existing explosive atmospheres. This primarily involves the elimination of ignition sources and the use of explosion-protected equipment. Tertiary measures limit the effects of an explosion. These include pressure relief, explosion suppression, and structural protection measures.
