Given its wide range of end uses and its role within the energy system, hydrogen plays a key role in the fight against climate change, as has already been recognized in the EU’s Hydrogen Strategy and the EU’s Green Deal.
In light of recent political developments—namely, the declining affordability of energy, the availability of raw materials, and the need to strengthen the sustainable competitiveness of European industry—it has taken on an even more central role, while at the same time positioning itself as an ally of decarbonization, growth, and European autonomy.
Despite the challenges ahead, this presents a tremendous opportunity to build a strong European hydrogen supply chain, break free from dependence on fossil fuels, and achieve the ambitious climate goals needed to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 °C.
