Germany’s gas networks are facing the biggest transformation in their history: hydrogen readiness, decommissioning options, new EU regulations, local heating planning, network bottlenecks, technical retrofits, and increasing demands for supply security are shaping the current discourse. While the EU Gas and Hydrogen Single Market Package and new legal requirements will have far-reaching consequences for grid operators, it remains unclear which path many municipal utilities will take: decommissioning, selective shutdown, or conversion to green gases such as hydrogen and biomethane. 46% of municipal utilities have not yet finalized their strategy.
Whether it’sretrofitting existing networks, constructing new pipelines, ortransporting different mediain parallel—the questions never end: Thedemands placed on pipe materials, design, operation, and safetyare increasing significantly. Hydrogen embrittlement, CO₂ phase behavior, impurities from biogas, new pressure and temperature regimes, and the multigase capability of distribution and transmission networks present network operators, manufacturers, and regulatory agencies withcomplex technical and regulatory challenges.
