Speichersysteme für Wasserstoff müssen spezifische Anforderungen erfüllen. Gründe liegen in den chemischen Eigenschaften von Wasserstoff. Es ist ein äußerst flüchtiges und explosives Gas. Daher erfordert es besondere Vorsichtsmaßnahmen bei Speicherung, Transport und Verwendung. Die vermehrte Nutzung von Wasserstoff erfordert sichere Speichersysteme, die es ermöglichen den Wasserstoff unter hohem Druck zu speichern. Ebenfalls müsse Leckagen vermieden werden. Beispielsweise dürfen bei langen Transportwegen, etwa mittels Schiffsverkehres, keine Verluste auftreten.
