After several years of planning and 13 months of construction, Abo Energy inaugurated and commissioned the H2 Hub Hünfeld in the summer of 2025. Abo Kraft & Wärme AG has been responsible for its operations ever since.
Electrolyzer Produces Hydrogen for a Fueling Station and Filling Plant
The H2 Hub includes an electrolyzer, a 350-bar refueling station, and a trailer filling station. The two electrolysis systems from the electrolyzer manufacturer Fest GmbH have a total capacity of 5 MW. At full capacity, they are expected to produce approximately 90 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. If necessary, the capacity could be expanded to up to 8 MW. The electrolyzer is expected to produce up to 450 metric tons of hydrogen annually, which will be supplied to the hydrogen refueling station and the trailer filling station. Wind and solar farms are expected to provide the necessary electricity.
Both the refueling station and the filling station were supplied by Air Liquide Advanced Technologies GmbH. In December 2022, Abo Energy signed the corresponding supply contract with the technology company. In addition to the ongoing on-site refueling of fuel cell buses and trucks, the integrated filling station will also be used to supply hydrogen to other users, such as hydrogen refueling stations that do not have their own production facilities.
Hydrogen Production Receives RFNBO Certification
According to the company, hydrogen production has been underway since the RFNBO certification in July 2025. At that time, according to Abo Energy, the facility was one of the first in Germany to receive TÜV certification under the CertifHy EU Voluntary Scheme. The certification verifies that the facility uses only green electricity for hydrogen production. Furthermore, the green electricity must come exclusively from PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) entered into directly with the electrolyzer.
The term RFNBO refers to renewable energy sources intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions are verified by certificates and can be counted toward the legally mandated GHG reduction quota. Therefore, certification is particularly relevant for bus and logistics companies so they can demonstrably use green hydrogen as a climate-friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
According to the company, Abo Kraft & Wärme and Greentrax were involved in the certification process. Using its Hydromize software, Greentrax calculated, among other things, thecarbon footprint for hydrogen production and is now responsible for creating and managing the digital sustainability certificates.
Funding Under the National Innovation Program
The H2 Hub received a total of 12 million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport as part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP). Funding for this initiative is also being provided as part of the German Recovery and Resilience Plan (DARP) through the European Recovery and Resilience Facility (ARF) under the NextGenerationEU program.
The funding guidelines are coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Projektträger Jülich (PtJ).
