The final investment decision for the “Green Hydrogen Sines” project was made in early July. The contract covers the complete supply of all project components needed to connect the electrolyzer to the medium-voltage grid and produce hydrogen using renewable energy. In addition, RCT Hydrogen is responsible for commissioning the facility and initiating green hydrogen production.
Hydrogen production is scheduled to begin in 2027
The plan is to use alkaline pressure electrolysis. Dr. Eric Rüland, Vice President of Sales & Products at RCT Hydrogen, describes it as a robust technology that will produce hydrogen efficiently and reliably under Portugal’s sunny conditions. According to the company, it is also TÜV-certified. The relevant manufacturing steps are planned to take place in Germany and Europe.
The electrolyzer manufacturer Jiang Guofu Hydrogen Energy Technology & Equipment (Guofuhee) is also involved in the project. The Chinese company is expected to supply cost-optimized components.
Delivery of the electrolyzer to Portugal is scheduled to begin in 2026. Hydrogen production is then scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027 .
Network of Green Hydrogen Refueling Stations Planned
The project’s client is Beyond Green Lda. The Portuguese project developer focuses on the energy sector, including the production, storage, and use of green hydrogen. The “Green Hydrogen Sines” project is part of the “Sines Green Hydrogen Valley” (SinesH2GValley). SinesH2GValley is Portugal’s first green hydrogen hub. It aims to achieve a fully decarbonized energy system and is developing various projects toward that goal.
In addition to hydrogen production, Beyond Green plans to develop the supporting infrastructure. This includes a network of refueling stations for green hydrogen as well as charging stations for electric vehicles, which will be powered by electricity from renewable energy sources. In doing so, the company aims to address two challenges at once: the limited availability of hydrogen refueling stations and the growing demand for high-performance charging networks for electric vehicles.
