Green hydrogen is still about two to four times as expensive as gray hydrogen from fossil fuels, depending on the region. In addition to high energy prices, the electrolysis technology used also affects the economic viability of production. Conventional processes, for example, are limited in their efficiency or require high investments.
According to Evonik, AEM electrolysis is intended to solve these problems. To this end, the company has developed the anion-conducting DURAION membrane.
AEM technology is intended to reduce investment costs
The electrolysis technology operates in a basic environment, which allows for the use of non-precious-metal and thus more cost-effective materials. According to technical studies, this can result in savings of at least 25 percent on investment costs. Since AEM electrolysis can produce hydrogen directly under pressure, additional and costly compression steps are eliminated. Furthermore, due to its flexibility, it is well-suited for operation with intermittent electricity from wind and solar sources.
The DURAION membrane is intended for use in AEM electrolysis. There, it combines ionic conductivity with chemical and mechanical stability. According to the company, no PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are used in its manufacture. The membrane is designed for operation under high current densities and pressures.
The coating plant is one of the largest in the world
Membrane production is now getting underway in Marl with the pilot plant. According to the company, the coating line —which is approximately 20 meters long—is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It produces membranes up to one meter wide, making them suitable for large-scale electrolysers. The pilot plant is expected to produce membranes for up to 2.5 GW of electrolysis capacity annually.
Christian Däschlein, Head of the New Growth Area AEM at Evonik, explained: “Our strength lies in our complete backward integration—from the starting molecules all the way to the finished membrane roll. This allows us not only to supply large quantities but also to deliver excellent product properties while maintaining consistently high quality.”
New Technology Center in Shanghai
Coinciding with the start of production in Germany, the new Evonik AEM Center in Shanghai is beginning operations . It is the Group’s first technology-focused application engineering center in Asia. The focus is on AEM electrolysis and its integration into the hydrogen infrastructure.
At the Evonik AEM Center in Shanghai, the membranes produced in Marl will be tested under industrial conditions in collaboration with local partners and customers. The center is aimed at global customers.
