Why Hamburg Will Become the Global Hub for Hydrogen

Hydrogen has reached a stage where progress depends less on ambition alone and more on coordination. Projects must link technology with infrastructure, policy with investment, and production with credible demand. This makes opportunities for the entire value chain to come together in one place increasingly important. From October 20–22, 2026, the Hydrogen Technology World Expo will bring this global community together at Hamburg Messe.

Hamburg is a particularly relevant setting for this discussion. As one of Europe’s most important ports, the city lies at the intersection of international trade, logistics, heavy industry, and energy infrastructure. Plans for hydrogen imports, local production, and a dedicated industrial network also bring it face-to-face with the practical challenges the sector is working to solve. More broadly, Germany’s industrial base and its position at the heart of Europe make it a critical market for hydrogen deployment, particularly in the steel, chemicals, transportation, power, and other hard-to-abate sectors.

The exhibition offers a glimpse into how rapidly the technology landscape is evolving. More than 1,000 exhibitors will showcase the entire hydrogen value chain, ranging from electrolysers, fuel cells, and production systems to compression, storage, pipelines, testing, safety, materials, digitalization, and end-use applications. This breadth is crucial: hydrogen projects do not depend on a single breakthrough, but on many technologies working reliably together at commercial scale.

A Week of Deals, Dialogue, and Direction

Alongside the exhibition, the three-day conference will combine high-level debate with detailed technical insight. Policymakers, project developers, technology leaders, and industrial users will examine the issues currently shaping the market: how to attract investment, build infrastructure, create demand, strengthen supply chains, and move projects from the development phase to operation. The value lies in bringing strategic and engineering perspectives together in the same discussion.

Just as important is what happens outside the formal program. Meetings on the exhibition floor are complemented by association gatherings, partner events, receptions, and other activities taking place throughout the week. These settings provide opportunities for longer conversations, new introductions, and the partnerships that often determine whether projects move forward.

The event’s importance ultimately stems from the concentration of people it brings together. For several days, Hamburg becomes a global meeting place for the hydrogen community, connecting established industry leaders with policymakers, engineers, investors, emerging technology companies, and international delegations. For anyone seriously working on the next phase of hydrogen, it will be hard to ignore the opportunity to be part of that conversation.

Siemens digitalisiert 100-MW-Wasserstoffanlage in Portugal
